Art

Make art with Scratch: paint a picture, bring drawings to life with animation, and make art that reacts to you.

Goals

By the end of this session you can:

  • Draw and change costumes in the Scratch paint editor
  • Make a simple animation by switching costumes in a loop
  • Make a sprite react when you click it or press a key
  • Remix an art starter project and make it your own

Words to know

costume
One picture of a sprite. A sprite can have many costumes, and switching between them makes it look animated.
loop
Blocks that repeat. forever repeats until the project stops, and repeat 10 repeats ten times.
event
Something that starts a script, such as a key press or a click.

The lesson

Step 1: Paint with Tera

Today’s main project is Art - Paint with Tera. Open the starter project, press the green flag and try it. Then click See inside to look at the scripts.

Step 2: Costumes and the paint editor

Click a sprite, then open its Costumes tab. Each picture is one costume. You can draw a new costume with the paint editor, or duplicate one and change it a little. Use the backdrop the same way to change the picture behind your sprites.

Step 3: Animation

An animation is a fast series of pictures. In Scratch you make one by switching costumes in a loop.

  1. when green flag clicked
  2. forever
  3. Inside it: next costume, then wait 0.2 seconds

The wait is important. Without it the costumes change too fast to see.

Step 4: Art that reacts to you

Events start scripts. Try these from the Events category:

  • when this sprite clicked: runs when someone clicks the sprite.
  • when space key pressed: runs when someone presses a key. You can pick any key.

Put a Looks block such as change color effect by 25 underneath, and the artwork changes when you click or press.

Step 5: Projects to remix

If your class finishes the main project early, choose one of these.

Art - Animation. Pick the starter you like:

Art - Interactive Art. Pick the starter you like:

Each starter gives you different characters and backgrounds, so choose the one you like best.

Exercise

A walking sprite

  1. Pick a sprite that has at least two costumes, or draw a second costume in the Costumes tab.
  2. Build: when green flag clicked, then forever, with next costume and wait 0.2 seconds inside it.
  3. Run it and watch the animation. Change the wait time to make it faster or slower.
  4. Add move 10 steps inside the loop so the sprite travels as it animates.
Need a hint?

If the sprite moves too fast to see, make the wait time longer.

Small project

My interactive artwork

Remix an art starter project and add one animation and one way for the person looking at it to interact.

  1. Open Paint with Tera and click Remix, or choose an Animation or Interactive Art starter.
  2. Press the green flag and play it once to see what it does.
  3. Change the artwork: draw or recolor at least one costume or backdrop.
  4. Add an interaction: use when this sprite clicked or when space key pressed to change something.
  5. Test it, then show it and say which part you designed.

Stretch it: Make the artwork change color or size when you press a key.

Quiz

Check your understanding

Pick one answer for each question. Your score appears right in the page; nothing is sent anywhere.

  1. Question 1How do you make a sprite look animated in Scratch?
  2. Question 2Which block switches a sprite to its next costume?
  3. Question 3What does the forever block do?
  4. Question 4You want something to happen when the player clicks a sprite. Which block starts that script?
  5. Question 5Your animation runs too fast to see. What is the easiest fix?
